Obituary

Mark E. Hughes, 71, a resident of Laurium passed away on Saturday February 29, 2020 at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital.

He was born on December 21, 1948 in Sendei, Honshu, Japan to Clarence and Helen (Ostertag) Hughes. Mark graduated from Calumet High School in 1967. Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the United States Army. After being discharged from services, Mark attended and earned a Bachelors Degree in Business from Michigan Technological University. He was an excellent marksman. He also raised and bred beagles for many years. He loved dogs and could always be seen driving around with his favorite dog in tow.

Mark was also an active member of the Lake Linden Hubbell Sportsman’s Club, where he served as Treasurer for many years. He was a DNR Certified Hunter’s Safety Instructor and volunteered his time teaching students at Camp Nesbit. He also supported the deer feed campaign throughout Houghton and Keweenaw counties.

My sympathy in the loss of Mark! My memories are all the rides he gave me from the Hughes home to the Levanen farm. And picking Kathy up to take her home! He was the big brother that took care of us little giggling girls! May Our Sovereign God comfort you and strengthen you in the lonely days ahead. With prayer, Mary (Levanen) Ovist

My family and I are sorry for your loss. Mark and I grew up together in Calumet. Because of his enthusiasm, he and I would ride our bikes down into Traprock Valley with fishing poles and high hopes. He also led me to the local Boy Scout troop under Sergeant Monette and we had many fine adventures. Our family moved away in 1965 and I had not seen him since. Condolences, Jim Pollock
