Obituary for Viola H. Mendelin (Wertanen)

Viola (Wertanen) Isaacson-Mendelin, 97, a recent resident of Park Ave. in Calumet passed away at the Omega House in Houghton on Monday morning May 16, 2022.

She was born on December 11, 1924 in Keweenaw Bay, daughter of the late Matt and Amanda (Lepisto) Wertanen.

Viola grew up in Fulton Location and graduated from Calumet High School in 1943. After graduating she worked at Ford Motor Co. as a Rosie the Riveter until the end of World War II.

On June 19, 1948 she was united in marriage to Wilho Isaacson and he preceded her in death on August 27, 1989. They owned and operated the Wolverine Market for many years and also the Post Office in Kearsarge.

She later was united in marriage to Tony Mendelin on August 31, 1996 and he preceded her in death on January 22, 2003. Together they resided in Sedar Bay, except for 2 winters in Florida.

Also preceding her in death were her parents, daughter Marcia, sons-in-law Karl Blau and Kenn Zerby, 3 brothers: Theodore, Hugo and infant brother Wilfred and step-daughter Nedra Granquist.

Surviving are: Daughter Diane Zerby of Mesa, AZ

3 grandchildren: Todd (Jeff Green) Lassila of Seattle, WA

Amy (Jason) Campbell of Brighton, MI

Kurt Blau of L’Anse

2 great grandchildren: Marlie and Connor Campbell
4 step-children
Jack (Anna) Mendelin of Marquette, Lois Ellefson of Cape Canaveral, FL

Peggy (Rick) Bagley of Marquette and Dave (Elaine) Mendelin of Rochester, MN

10 step-grandchildren 3 step great-grandchildren

Along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A funeral service will be held on Friday May 20, 2022 at 11:00 AM in the Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet with Pastor Jared Howard to officiate.

Friends are invited to the Siskiwit Reception Hall following the funeral for a luncheon in Viola’s memory.

Burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery.
