Obituary for Robert Norden

Robert “Bob” Norden, 83, a resident of Calumet passed away on Thursday December 16, 2021 at UP Health System-Portage.
Bob was born on October 25, 1938 in Laurium to Earl and Elza (MacKenzie) Norden. He attended the local schools and graduated from Calumet High School - Class of 1956.
Following high school, Bob attended Michigan Technological University and Soumi College before deciding to pursue his love of music. He earned his Bachelors of Science in Music Education in 1961, and later he earned his Masters degree from there as well.
Bob started teaching music at Houghton High School in 1961. Through his teaching, he influenced and inspired his students to excel to their highest potential in anything they did. His love of music was contagious and many of his former students still share their musical talents. After teaching 30 years, Bob retired from Houghton Portage Township Schools in 1991.
Bob organized and played in many different bands and ensembles throughout his lifetime. They included the Hot Shots, Walt Laverdiere’s Top Hatters, Copper Country Clown Band, Keweenaw Swing Band, Backroom Boys, Calumet Community Band, the Swing Cats, Dixie Champs, and was active with the Calumet Players.
Aside from music, Bob’s other passion was traveling with adventures to all 50 states as well as extensive travel throughout the world.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents Earl and Elza Norden.
He is survived by his brothers: Don (Nataline) Norden of Webster, Florida and Bill (June) Norden of Longwood, Florida.
His niece Julie (Tim) Norden Larkins of Dalton, GA, and their children, Tyler and Jack Larkins.
His nephews: Gary (Carrie) Norden of Apopka, Florida and Rick (LaShawn) Norden of New Smyrna Beach, Florida.
His Aunt Betty Norden Dunbar of Slidell. Louisiana.
His cousin Judy LeBris of Walnut Creek, California.
Special friends: Cate Lawrence, Benji and Annie Brotherton, Don "Charlie" Schwenn, and Karen Tetzlaff.
Per Bob’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a Celebration of his life will take place Sunday July 17, 2022 from 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM at the Hidden Pines Barn in Calumet, Michigan.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, donations may be made in his name to the Copper Country Humane Society.
