Obituary for Barbara Granroth

Barbara Katherine Granroth, 88, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, December 11, 2021. She was born on May 22, 1933 to Henry and Sylvia (Warjakka) Aho in Calumet.

Barb lost her Mom in a car/train accident at 8 years old. After her mother’s death, she lived with her Finnish grandparents and then with her Uncle Gabe and Aunt Elvie Oja in Fulton while her father was earning a living as a commercial fisherman. She always looked forward to spending time with her dad in LacLaBelle when he wasn’t working.

She attended the Calumet Public Schools and graduated from Calumet High School in 1951. After graduation she worked at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. In 1955 she was joined in marriage to Richard Ellis Granroth. They began their married life in the Detroit area and returned to the Copper Country area in 1957 to raise their family. Some of her best times and favorite memories were from the time that they lived in Copper City from 1958-1968. She also enjoyed the volunteer work that she did for decades for the Aspirus Keweenaw Auxiliary in Laurium.

Preceding her in death, besides her parents, was her husband Richard in 2011, after 55 years of marriage.

She leaves behind a daughter, Janice Fletcher of Laurium, two sons, Gary (Brenda) Granroth of Milford, MI and Mark Granroth of Carlisle, PA. Grandchildren: Nicole (Robby) McCabe, Jason (Megan) Granroth, Kristin (Thomas) Beebe, Jonathon Granroth, Amanda (Brandon) Combs, Cody Granroth, Colin Granroth, Evan (Heather) Granroth and Sara Fletcher. Great grandchildren: Caroline and Molly Combs and Briar Beebe. Special friend: Beth Maki

Special thank you to Jan and Sara Fletcher for selflessly providing care to Barbara for many years. Their care and companionship allowed her to remain at home for her entire life.

Barbara was a member of the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Calumet, Michigan.

The Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements. A Spring memorial service and burial will be held.
