Obituary for George Oinas

George Oinas, age 79, a resident of Calumet, passed away on Wednesday January 27, 2016 at UP Health System- Portage.

He was born on March 5, 1936 to Isaac and Ida (Parkinen) Oinas in Hancock, Michigan.

He was a graduate of Hancock High School. After high school, he attended Michigan Technological University where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Mechanics in 1958.

On June 24, 1972 he married Carol Metta in Portuguese Bend, California.

George spent most of his career working in Los Angeles, California. He worked as an Aerospace Engineer. He retired from BAE Systems in 2004. After retirement George and his wife moved to Simpsonville, SC and purchased a house. In 2014 George sold the house and moved back to Calumet.

George is preceded in death by: his parents, Isaac and Ida; his wife, Carol who passed away on February 23, 2012; and his brother, Roland “Rollie.”

He is survived by:

Sister: Mary (Bob) Anderson of Calumet

Nephews: Ryan and Matthew

Numerous cousins.

And his faithful dog: Snoopy

A Funeral Service for George will be held on Saturday January 30, 2016 at 11:00 AM at the Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet with Pastor Dave Taivalkoski to officiate.

Burial will take place in the spring at the Lake View Cemetery in Calumet.

The family would like to thank Dr. Janners and his staff for the wonderful care they gave to George. Also thank you to UP Health System- Portage staff and nurses, Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital staff and nurses, Aspirus at Home nurses and staff, and to the Houghton County Medical Care Facility nurses and staff.
