Obituary for Judith Marie Winquist (Koski)

Judith “Judy” Winquist, age 82, a resident of Copper City, passed away on Monday October 19, 2015 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. She passed away from respiratory complications after having back surgery this past summer. She was born on May 11, 1933 in Ahmeek, Michigan to John Sivert and Viola (Erickson) Koski.
Judy attended Calumet High School, graduating with the Class of 1951 and also attended Suomi College (Finlandia University) in Hancock.
Judy married Donald E. Heikkila from Houghton (Paavola),Michigan in 1952, who preceded her in death in 1984.
Judy later married Paul “Ozzie” Winquist on September 3, 1993 at Faith Lutheran Church in Calumet. Judy and Ozzie spent 22 wonderful years together enjoying each others company by spending winters in Florida and summers in Copper City, traveling, volunteering, and visiting relatives in Finland. In her earlier years, Judy worked as an executive secretary for a Royal Oak law firm and AMT Corporation eventully retiring from William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan in 1993.

Judy was known to be a very kind hearted lady and a steadfast Christian who loved The Lord and had a compassionate heart for all. She was a wonderful loving mother, grandmother and stepmother to both her family and stepchildren. Everyone who knew Judy knew just how much she loved being out and volunteering with everyone. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Calumet where she often volunteered with the church and read the Sunday lessons. She also volunteered at various places in and around the Keweenaw, Calumet Theater, Keweenaw Historical Society, Finnish-American Heritage Center in Farmington, and the Finnish American Center in Florida.
Judy was preceded in death by her parents John and Viola; first husband, Donald E. Heikkila who passed away in 1984; and a son David Heikkila who passed away in 1995.
She is survived by:

Stepchildren: Jim (Debbie) Winquist of Calumet, Nancy (Chris) Crouch of Hancock
Sister: Margie (Doug) Johnson of Fenton, Michigan
Grandchildren: Karen (Jed) Gustafson of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Bryan Basco of North Dakota, Nathan Heikkila of Marathon Key, Florida and Kirsi Heikkila of Key West, Florida.
Step Grandchildren: Stacy (Terry) Brey of Hancock, Michigan, Chad (Julie Parkila) Crouch of Casper, Wyoming, Bryan Winquist and Sarah Winquist.
Great Grandchildren: Clark, Kali, McKenzie, Dylan, Tarynn, Maari and Kayden and many nieces & nephews.
Judy also loved and was especially close to her favorite Aunt; Ruth Tervo of Traverse City.
Visitation will be held on Thursday October 22, 2015 from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the funeral at Church.

A Funeral service will be held on Friday October 23, 2015 at 11:00 am at the Faith Lutheran Church in Calumet with Pastor Peter Vorhes to officiate.
