Hubert “Chuck” Chopp 96, of Calumet, passed away early Wednesday morning, March 4, 2014, at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital.
He was born on October 25, 1917 in Copper City, a son of Anton and Natalia (Ozanich) Chopp . Hubert attended the local schools and graduated from Calumet High School. He was a veteran of WWII having served as Master Sergeant in supply and transportation with the US Army. He was a leader at the CCC Camp Gogebic. He worked at Vertin’s Department Store, FritoLay as a route salesman and Fraki’s Market.
He was united in marriage to Agnes Petitte on May 9, 1945. He was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Church in Calumet and the American Legion and Disabled American Veterans.
“Chuck” was an accomplished baseball player, where he roamed the outfield for South Range and Hancock. He also played hockey, was an avid bowler, and enjoyed watching baseball, hockey, football & golf.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers- Anton, Joseph, Svetko, & Julius and two sisters, Frances & Mary.
Surviving are his wife Agnes and Son, Larry Chopp of Calumet
as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Funeral Mass for Mr. Chopp will be held at 11 AM Saturday March 8, 2014 at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Calumet. Fr. Mupparathara will officiate.
Friends may call at the Erickson-Crowley-Peterson Funeral Home on Friday March 7, 2014 from 4-7 PM with a Prayer Service to be held at 7:00 PM.
Spring burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery with the Copper Country Veterans Association holding Military Honors.
